Postby garyh3 » Fri Dec 16, 2005 10:57 am

I have been left this spoon and I need some advice as to what it is.

Is it silver silver plate or gold or some other metal.

thanks for any help

While the photo is not that helpful, I would hazard a guess that it is Sterling Silver, as it appears to have the Lion Passant, London town mark and a "p" which, I think, is for 1910. I cannot make out the maker. A slightly less "reflective" photo would help./

I'm a bit slow this morning it seems - I should have recognised that "star" in the maker's mark straight away. *sigh* oh well, work christmas parties will do that to you. Anyway, your maker is Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders and James Francis Hollings Shepard, prolific makers of small works and jewellery in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Thank you so much Waylander for the information I will put that with the piece. I had tried 20 different photos to get the marks shown but that was the best I could get.

Thanks again for the information.

best wishes

Your spoon was made in London id 1910-11 for the Coronation of George V. It is a copy of a medieval anointing spoon which is used at each coronation. Best wishes, Mike.
