Help with Exeter teaspoons

Postby rat-tail » Sun Jul 25, 2010 3:30 pm

Hi think this teaspoon is Exeter 1798 - the cusped duty mark and lion passant - but would appreciate any help identifying the maker which I think is GG. Many thanks Frank

Hi Frank,

Your spoon is not Exeter, but instead London 1797.
GG is the mark of George Gray. His mark is often, or perhaps always, found over-striking the mark of members of the Bateman family. If you look closely at your mark you can see that there is another beneath it.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone knows which makers George Gray over-struck besides the Bateman family.

Miles

Hi Frank and Miles,

This old post reveals a likely supplier: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=14766

Hi Miles and Trev - thanks for this - must be that cusped duty mark that threw me on this wild goose chase. Have had a closer look at the makers mark and can now see it is an overstrike, but can't work out who the original maker is. - Appreciated Frank
