Benjamin Mordecai/Mountigue Variation?

Hi,

This is a tablespoon, 8 1/4" (21cm) in length, assayed at London in 1779. The maker was Hester Bateman. The maker's mark has been overstruck by a 'B.M' mark, very likely that of Benjamin Mordecai/Mountigue, but this example, unlike those described by Arthur Grimwade, has a central pellet.







So, a slight variation on Mordecai known mark, or are there any thoughts on another answer.

Hello Trev,

Mordecai/Montigue registered a corner cut rectangle with a pellet at London AO in 1773. The mark is recorded in the bucklemakers list of Grimwade's book in Section VIII. Later ones with a pellet are also recorded for him there.

Hi Mike,

Many thanks, to be honest I didn't bother to check the Bucklemaker's List as I never thought that a mark from there would have used on a spoon, but of course this was not the normal use of the mark, which in its own way makes it all the more interesting.

I'll move this post to the London Hallmarks section.
