Help with maker of these georgian specs

Postby rat-tail » Sat Dec 26, 2009 5:25 am

Hi I wonder if anyone could help me identify who IH is as the maker of these georgian spectacles dated for London (i assume) 1817. Any information appreciated - thanks frank

The marks on the nose piece of the specs - a lion passant and duty mark

The marks on both sides of the specs, right where the ear pieces join the frame. Note the two extentions are not marked. Initially I though the maker's mark might be the owners initials, but seems to definitely be struck by a punch rather than by an engraver, and is repeated on both sides. It does not appear to be in a cartouch.

Sorry these marks very difficult to photograph - thanks frank

Hi Frank,

John Holmes seems the likely candidate as the maker of your spectacles.

Holmes entered an incuse mark without surround as a smallworker in 1810 from Cherry Tree Alley, Whitecross Street, and again in 1817 when he moved to 2, Hospital Gate, West Smithfield.

Thanks Trev - appreciate the info. Must admit the incuse punch struck me as unusual. Frank
