Barnard 1881 fitted case salt set...need help with "L&q

Postby lmclayton2 » Tue Jul 07, 2009 6:29 am

Image Image

This is my first post so I hope I am following protocol but here goes :)

I have posted a picture of the whole set and another composite picture of the bases of the four cellars.

Maker's Mark: Walter & John Barnard (wBj in shield)
Sterling Mark: Lion Passant
Duty Mark: Queen Victoria
Assay Mark: London: Leopard's Head
Date Letter: Block "F" inside a shield = 1881

I am still trying to figure out what the capital "L" represents?

I have searched the site and the forum and have been unable to figure it out. I greatly appreciate your insight!

It looks like it has been crudely scratched in; if so, it could have been made by an owner for recognition purposes.

That could be... I have certainly not been able to find anything else like it... thanks :)

Very interesting conical shell salt spoons, by the way: I don't think I've seen those before.
