Marks on London 1901 sugar bowl: Maker?

Postby NiMa » Thu May 28, 2009 1:40 pm

Hi,

I have not been able to identify the maker's mark on this silver sugar bowl, or interpret the scratch marks and other marks (a 2 and something else) on the bottom.

I don't know if it is significant, but what I think is the maker's mark is crisper than the other marks, and somewhat separately placed.

It weighs 3.08 ozt.

The coppery color in the picture of the bottom is just due to the reflection that helped make the scratched marks visible.

Can anyone give me some help on interpreting these marks?

Thanks for any assistance you can give!

NiMa

I believe your sponsors mark is William Hutton and Sons Ltd. About 2/3 of the right hand side of the mark is worn away, leaving mainly the Ss of the Sons and to the right of this one curved side of the H. See British Hallmarks London section this site.
The number 2 I do not know its exact purpose. I have identical pattern Wm Hutton 1903, 3 piece tea service each piece the tea pot is 3 but the milk jug and sugar bowl are identical 1k

Brilliant, Larkfield, thanks very much! I had spent all my time looking under "S".

Can anyone help with the scratch marks? They don't seem to relate to the weight...

Kind regards

I think pawn and antique shops used to scratch silver in this way.
