Toy Bowl

Postby Granmaa » Thu May 14, 2009 11:05 am

Here is a little toy bowl (1.5" diameter) made in 1806. The two handles have been added in 1899 by the Pairpoint Brothers. The handles are marked with lions passants (as I believe the plural is written). I have two questions:

Who is TB.
What are the rules for adding additions onto earlier pieces? I thought it was just the extra piece which had to be hallmarked.
There may already be a post on this subject on the site, but I had no luck finding it.

Hi Miles,

This question I believe is covered by the 'Gold and Silver Wares Act of 1844'

Section 5. If any Hall-marked ware is altered either by addition or otherwise so that its character or the use for which it was originally designed shall be changed, or for any ware shall have any addition made thereto, although its character or use shall not be changed and the weight of such addition bears a greater proportion to the original weight than 4 oz. in every pound weight Troy, every such ware is required to be Hall-marked as a new ware. But if the weight of such addition shall not bear a greater proportion to the original weight than 4 oz. in the pound weight Troy, and the character or use of such ware not be changed, the addition only may be re-Hall-marked, provided that before such addition is made the ware is brought to the Assay Office for inspection and the office after due explanation assent to the addition.

The original maker of the bowl is likely to be Thomas Bligh of 16, Great Sutton Street, Clerkenwell, he entered two incuse marks as a Casemaker that could apply to one on your piece, the first on the 22nd November 1797 and the second on the 4th January 1803, both as 'TB'.

Thank you Trev.

That's interesting. I would have thought this bowl would have warranted the second option: "the addition only may be re-Hall-marked" .
The use hasn't really been changed: it's still a toy bowl. The handles don't weigh more than 1/4 of the original bowl, and yet the main object is fully hallmarked. Perhaps the small size of the handles necessitated such marking.

one Lion Passant
two Lions Passant

It's like a Court Martial but several Courts Martial.

I also like to use what I think is correct for the London Office mark - which is a Lions Head, which I think is technically a Leopart. He is not the called after spotted cat the leopard, but a leo - part .
I think !

Here it is in a Middle-English dictionary, the "leopart" spelling turns up several times in the usage examples of column two.
