Coffee and tea set 1845 - Need maker and city

Postby ellenm1 » Sat May 09, 2009 1:09 pm

Hi and thanks for looking. This is a coffee and tea set marked 1845 (in Roman numerals). There is the lion and the female head indicating the date range. I don't know who the maker is (BS) or the city. Does anybody recognize these marks?

If anybody knows the pattern, I'd love to know it too. Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

That appears to be the mark of Benoni Stephens of London, although the date letter is not visable, the rest of the marks look good for the 1845 period.

What does the inscription say?

Thank you. I just found Benjamin Smith as a silver maker during this same period and was thinking that's who made it. This was a presentation set given to an ancestor of a friend. The inscription says: "This service - An offering of esteem and gratitude from Ann Rowland to Will'm Titherington - MDCCCXLV."
