GB Maker: Help needed

Postby clown123 » Mon Feb 02, 2009 11:16 pm

I have a delightful sweetmeat dish and cannot confirm the maker's mark. London 1763. It looks very much like GB with a pellet. The only GB I could find is George Baskerville. Does that seem reasonable?

Hi,

It may well be George Baskerville, but this was the time of the missing Largeworkers register, so we will probably never know for sure.

Grimwade has a very similar mark (3580), recorded in the 'Unregistered Marks' section with a possible attribution to Baskerville. This mark was also noted on a sweetmeat-basket.

Thanks for the info. Now I have to find out more about the missing silversmith's marks for that period. I'm intrigued. Do you have any references for that?
