GeorgeI Punchladle from 1724 ???

Postby lolo1965 » Fri Oct 21, 2005 4:21 pm

Can anybody tell me the age of the Puncladle. I guess it is from 1724, but the Britania is making me a little bit cofused. Britania standard was used until 1716 I guess. City is London ???
Many thanks for your help.

Possibly Jas. Conner of Dublin, date letter for 1805. This leaves the last mark as being a crowned harp, which doesn't seem to fit, but it is rubbed and perhaps altered as shown in the photo.

Definately Brittania, the Dubin Boujet would show her seated with a harp by her side and without the staff in her left hand. The defaced mark looks like a crowned leopard for London.
I believe the re-introduction of the sterling standard of 1720 did not mean the Brittania standard was abolished - so in theory at least it should be possible to have a later piece of Brittania.
Another question - when did the makers mark revert to initials after being the first two letter of the maker's surname? IO could be Jones, Johnson etc??????
