Help with Family silver mug

Postby Kiwimel » Wed Sep 17, 2008 1:53 am

Hi there, am trying to confirm the history of a tankard that has been with our family for years. The marks show it London made, and I think the year is 1594 - but I'm not 100% sure as the City mark doesn't quite match what I've found?
I am unable to match the maker with anyone and would appreciate any help at all in id'ing any details of this mug. The photos are at the link below (I hope it works, I got confused with the BBCode stuff).

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Your mug bears the Hallmarks for London 1732. The maker's mark is that of John Edwards II.(Grimwade 1267).

He was apprenticed in 1708, but did not take up his Freedom until 1723.
He entered his first mark in partnership with George Pitchs in 1723 and alone in 1724.

Your mug looks to be in an amazingly good condition with very crisp marks. Can you post some more photos including that of the engraving.

Trev.

Thank you SO much! The mug is at my parents, but I'll get them to send me some more photos and post them soon.

as requested, I've put up some new photos... the engraving on the mug is the Fitzgerald Family crest...
