Hanoverian Scrollback Spoons - no date mark - maker?

Postby shasla » Mon Mar 31, 2008 9:33 pm

I inherited a set of 6 Hanoverian teaspoons with scroll decoration on the backs. There is no date mark, as you can see in the photos. I believe the mark to be T-D, though it is quite disfigured on some of the spoons. The style of the lettering in the maker's mark is quite different, perhaps earlier, than that of Thomas Dicks. Any ideas as to maker and date? Many thanks.

Could it be this? Thomas Daniel 1775?

This is a good possibility. I don't have access to a directory of maker's marks so I don't know if Thomas Daniel registered a mark with a bullet between the letters or not.

OK. I think I just answered my own question.
This mark seems to be the one!
Scroll down to Thomas Daniell - 1784

The letterforms are not exactly the same and, of course, there is no way to verify the year, but it's close.

Hi,

The only match, datewise and with a pellet in Grimwade's would be Thomas Dene (Grim 2726) who entered his mark 22nd July 1767, his address was given as St. Lukes Buildings.

My references don't show a pellet in Thomas Daniel's mark.

Hello Shasla,

The maker's stamp on your spoons is so poorly engraved I wonder if it's not an unauthorised mark and the maker could then be any of the "TDs".

Jackson's Silver & Gold Marks (2002 Edition page 228) refers to his having seen tablespoons by Thomas Doxey, assayed London 1759, which had scroll back bowls. His authorised mark had no pellet though but it's still just a possibility.....?
