I was recently given two pieces of silver by my Aunt. The first, covered in this post, is an English two handled cup which unfortunatly has very worn hallmarks. Using this site, and a book I got out of the library, I think I've been able to decifer the marks fairly acurately. From left to right the marks are: HS (for the maker Henry Sardet?), the Lion Passant, the Leopard's Head with Crown, the date letter C (for 1798) and finally the Sovereign Head duty mark of 1786-1821.

Am I interpreting these marks correctly? The date letter is the mark giving me the most trouble. While I think it's an upper case C, it might also be the bottom portion of a G (for 1802) or the small case C of 1818.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

You may find that the maker's mark is actually the other way up and it may be "SH" for Soloman Hougham. Date letters - could be "C" for 1798, "G" for 1802 or "c" for 1818. The sequence of the punches may help, unfortunately I'm not that familiar with the sequence for items such as this.

I believe you'd have to add the 'U' for 1815 and the 'e' for 1820 as possibilities.
