I believe i have deciphered this one, it is my first older british spoon my other ones just say sterling;



left to right : duty marking 1838-1890
Year stamping : 1859
Sterling marking
Leopard after 1822 to present

HH
Henry Holland reg 1860

Was unsure about this, if made in 1859 then registerd in 1860, am i doing this wrong?

Hi Ed

You are correct, Henry Holland entered two marks, this one on the spoon was his first mark entered in 1840 and used up unto 1860 when another different mark was entered.

Also on this spoon you have what is known as "Journeyman marks" (the two small dots)

Your reading of the Hallmarks is correct.
Henry Holland (b.1806 d. c.1880) entered his first mark in 1838 and his final mark in 1878. In the early 1850's he took his son Henry Holland (No2) into partnership. In 1866 they acquired the business of Elizabeth Eaton and Son. In 1883 they purchased the firm of Chawner and Co. from George Adams and renamed themselves Holland, Aldwinckle and Slater. In 1887 they acquired Robert Hennell and Sons and were still in business until the 1930's.
Various versions of the HH mark were in use from 1838 until 1880.
