West India 2nd Regiment beaker marks

Post by SusanA66 »

Hi there, new to the site and silver ID in general. Also new to Imgur, which has yet to send me confirmation of my signing up to my email which was some hours ago, so posting the pics to another site and hoping they work here.

Recently two beakers came in to my friend's antique store. Both are marked 'West India Regt' with the number 2 in the middle of a crest. The West India 2nd Regiment was active in India from 1799-1888. They are approximately 4" tall.

It's the marks that confuse me. On one of the beakers most of the marks are very poorly struck, you can't even come close to making out the maker's mark. However you can see a lion passant, an uncrowned leopard, a capital P (dated to 1830) and what appears to be the right-facing profile of King George IV. For example I find it odd that the position of the duty mark and date letter are reversed.
