Help in Dating OLD Bergen Norway Silver Spoon 5 Hallmarks

Post by nnorb »

Hi Folks,
We recently acquired this small spoon. Measures 4 3/4" long with a 3/4" bowl. It is hand chased engraving on the handle and the back of the spoon. We had a hard time identifying the hallmarks on the back, but believe the top one is the mark for the city of Bergen, Norway. But again, not positive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Hello there, definately Norvegian. The 7 balls is the mark for Bergen, confirmed by the B which the hallmark for the essayer operating between 1812 and 1821 in this city. AB is probably the marker's mark. then the zodiac sign and the 20 proves it has been assayed very precisely between the 21st of june and the 22nd of July 1820. The only thing that puzzles me to prove that it is Norvegian of this period, there should be a 6th hallmark which gives the title of the silver in Lodig which is normally a square hallmark with some figures and perhaps an L.

Hope I was able to help. Best Regards. Myriam

Hi Myriam,
That was a great deal of help. It does not have the 6th mark though. Thanks again,
