It is no snuff box- it is a Luktevnnshus, something like a vinaigrette , from Norway. Please use Google for translation!
A nice find!!

Hello!

I remembered that this is a snuff box )). But why sometimes its base is made in the form of a box with a lid?

Thank you in advance.

Once and for all: this are no snuff boxes! They were kind of a "smelling box" with some cotton dipped into a nice smelling liquid of your favour. Just remember the bad teeth of the young girls of that time and their bad breath!! The compartment at the stand was for a balm of your choice. Some stupid dealers want to believe you it was the place where the girls hide their coin for the collect in the church. Total nonsense - it was for balm or pomade.

Hovedvandsæg

Many older pomanders had several compartments.

From Denmark home of hovedvandsæg.
The liquid was calle hovedvand and included spices and very much (salmiakspiritus) household ammonia.
Could be eau de cologne but the main content was salmiakspiritus

And the small room at the bottom - it is for the coin.

Coin or no coin, that's the question.
Mange hovedvandsæg er forsynet med en fod med et lille gemme i bunden, der kan lukkes op. Heri opbevaredes moskus eller andre kostbare duftstoffer, som man ligeledes kunne have fornøjelse af at dufte til.

Many hovedvandsægs are provided with a foot with a small save in the bottom that can be opened. In it were stored musk or other precious fragrances, which one could also have the pleasure of smelling.

As it was used both at home and outdoors (in pocket or purse) one of containers may also have been used for coins.

Do they have round coins with less than 5mm to 10mm diameter especially for the church collection in Denmark and Norway which fit in the base compartment? Or better: square coins? The "experts" should explain....

The 3 skilling would also be fine for a collect. Corresponding to a proper gift. For a whelty farmers vife.
