Help needed with maker's mark on Danish silver spoon

Postby touchstone » Sat Aug 08, 2015 9:37 pm

Hello-
I'm looking for any information on this little spoon (it is approx 4.5 inches long), I believe it is of Danish origin.

It has a twisted design on the spoon's stem, and a face on the end,
here's a close up:

On the back of the spoon, there are 3 marks. I think I've figured out two (please correct me if I'm wrong), but I need help on one of them.
The three marks are:

Going from left to right, the three closeups are:

Looking at the hallmark information in this site, I believe that the assay mark is Simon Groth, and that the three towers (with an "83" below the towers) indicates that it is Danish silver, with the year being 1883.

What I can't seem to find is what the "FL" stands for, although I'm guessing it is a maker's mark?

Any information, or correction on what I am thinking, would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi!

Yes, assay mark is Simon Groth (1863-1904) and Town mark for Ålborg/Aalborg (often misstaken for Copenhagen). Can't find maker FL yet. I'll keep looking.

Best,
Thomas

Thank you. I looked on this site's page with Danish maker's marks, specifically the Danish Silver Marks page http://www.925-1000.com/denmarkF.html , and had noticed the F.L. for F. Lindgren, in Copenhagen, from 1893-1910. I had seen that the characters just under the three towers mark (see the photo in the original post) looks like "83" to me, so I had originally thought that the F. Lindgren listed in the Danish Silver Marks page could not be the maker of my spoon.

Several thoughts: Perhaps those characters aren't "83" (what else, though?)? Perhaps there are father & son silversmiths with the same name? Maybe F. Lindgren *was* producing items before 1893?

Thank you so much for your information!

Yes. Hose is right.Sorry, I stand corrected. The "Aalborg"-like-hallmark fooled me.
