A. Halberstadt spoons - unknown initials

Postby Arabelle » Sun Dec 21, 2014 6:03 am

I have recently been given a set of 6 small spoons. Judging by what I know of their history (wedding gift in 1957), I am guessing that the tower mark with 55 below is for 1955. They are definitely from A. Halberstadt as can be seen on the lid of the original box they are in. What I am not sure of is who is the HS or SH initials? Any info gladly welcomed.

Hi Arabelle,

Welcome to the Forum.

Danish, not Dutch.

This page will explain all: http://www.925-1000.com/dm_Assay.html

Thanks Trev. I know that they are Danish, by the details on the lid of the box. I have already looked at the page you have indicated, which is where I ascertained the 1955 date. What is not shown on that page is the HS or SH initials mark that is on the spoon. If my dating is correct (1955), then the initials should surely be Johannes Siggaard's? But to me, they don't look like those shown on the page?

Not sure where the photograph of the girl has suddenly sprung from? I certainly didn't post it.

Hi Arabelle,

My apologies, I was trying to do two things at once and jumped in with the assumption of the assaymaster's mark without checking, that will teach me a lesson.

Hopefully one of our Scandinavian members can provide the answer.

(there is no photo of a girl showing this end)

Hi ~ your spoons were made by Horsens Sølvvarefabrik, their mark can be seen here: Denmark H The company was founded in Horsens in 1904 by W.& S. Sørensen, unless something has changed recently, they're still in business, owned by Gense.

Just as a note, though you seem to know the history of these spoons and there's no reason to doubt their being original to the retailer's box, that's not always the case.

Well...mind my saying but some minor reasons there might be... You see A. Halberstadt was and is still today mainly known as a jewelry manufacturer and a jewelry shop. It is very easy to put spoons in any spoon box. They always fit! The spoons look also rather short for the box. Anyway, no big deal.

Wow! I really thought that they were in the original box, but now I see that yes, the box is a bit bigger. Many, many thanks for identifying the mark, I would never have been able to find that out as I was totally on the wrong track.

Much appreciated.
