Is Nic.S. Madsen of Madsen & T. Baagøe

Postby gonzbarb » Sun Sep 14, 2014 1:33 pm

Hello All,

This is my first post. I have 2 silver plated spoons in the original box that are very simply marked N S M 830 S on the back. Because the original box is clearly marked Nic. S. Madsen Gullsmed Bergen, I know they are from Norway and I assume around the early 1900's but I do not know if they are made by the Madsen of Madsen & T. T. Baagøe. I read the forum on that company but still do not know. I'd appreciate any help you might lend.

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Please add an image of the marks. From what you state, these spoons sound more like silver than plated.

Madsen & T. Baagoe were a Danish company.

Trev.

So maybe it is not the same Madsen since the box seems like they are from Norway . I have searched the internet for info but have come up empty handed. Any help would be appreciated.

Your spoons are from Bergen in Norway. The maker's name is Nicolai Severin Madsen, born 1874 and dead 1955. His working period in Bergen was 1916-1955.

Thank you so much!!!!!! I appreciate your knowledge. I am happy that they are sterling silver too.

Do you know what these spoons who have been used for? The spoon bowl is very round.

You don't give any measures but usually you stir with a spoon ;-)))))) Ordinary spoons for sugar, coffee, tea, jam, jelly whatever. Mind my saying but your spoons are silver but not sterling 925/1000 but 830/1000.

Hahaha Qrt.S I deserved that teasing!

So they are not sterling silver but silver. Does the 830 refers to the amount or quality of silver used?

Again thank you for your time and knowledge!!

Mathematics my good man, mathematics. Of course it does. Sterling silver means that the amount of silver in the alloy is 925 promille (925/1000) or 92.5% if it easier to understand. Then of course 830 means 830 promille alternatively 83% . The rest is copper.
