Here is a 5.187" (13.175cm) with a makers mark of I.N.P., Sweden, then what appears to be W4. The upper case W is without cartouche. W is not a letter used in Swedish date marks. Is the city letter Vadstena or Varberg? Your thoughts as always are appreciated.
Thank you so much Trev, let me transcrib the data. Unfortunately the images are no longer available to compare with mine.
I.N.P. for Johan Niklas Palm Born in Visby Sweden 5.12.1812 died 9.9.1894 master from 1842-1894 W4 or V4 for 1851 W city mark without cartouche for Visby on Gotland Island Sweden Swedish guarantee mark indicates a silver fineness of no less than 830-1000 parts silver
Was starting to notice that W when used for a city mark would relate to cities that began with V. Did not connect the dots with the date letters.
off topic - a little bit. V=W and J=I in former times the letter was used as the same. In periods a Towns name could be spelled with v and in other periods/by others it was spelles with w. This goes for all of the Nordic countries and Northern Germany. And its not only city names bus also peoplenames etc.
Not at all my friend, yöur input is always most valuable. Do see the J=I used in English marks and other items as well. Even in the Hawaiian language W is pronounced as V. Always something new to learn.
Was just adding this image to finish off this post, was just noticing how similar, but not exact, it is to the Gammal Fransk pattern we were just commenting on in the Carl Johan Kling post here. A variation perhaps.
