Unusual Danish Date Mark

Postby dognose » Sun Jun 22, 2014 12:09 pm

Hi,

We are putting together examples of the Danish date marks, see: Danish Date Marks Project

This example of a 1834 mark has been found, but rather than surrounded by an oval, this one is contained within an oblong punch with clipped corners:

It was noted with this set of marks:

Can anyone cast any light on this mark?

Hello Trev!
As I saw in the date mark project: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=37335
Hose showed marks with similar oblong from 1834, and 1837. But the church in the same year was different in his mark.
I'm courious the reason too!
Best regards!
Krisztián

The 34 mark is as should be. It’s not a church but the 3 defence Towers from the Copenhagen mark.
Boye has a clear drawing of the mark. In those years 34 36 and 37 that is the shape of cartouche. In 38 39 40 the cartouche is square.
The towers in 33 and 34 are like 3 triangles on each other forming a Tower.
On top of each Tower is a star.
The star in 34 more looks like a cross.

The half-moon points left or right - depending of year.

All the Towers differ. In design of Towers - stars - half-moon (left right) - whether the line under Towers is dotted or full or double. The Towers can be filled or empty. By looking at the mark and comparing you can determine year - even when year is worn of by polishing.

But that requires a full set of marks.
