Norge 1924 C&S makers mark?

Postby WarrenKundis » Mon May 05, 2014 1:00 pm

Have recently acquired this large Norwegian engraved Norge 1924 on the back with MU in one script then C&S.830 in another. The finial bears a raised lightness of St Olaf. Have been unable to identify the silversmith but have found two other spoons that bear the same C&S mark with similar design elements.

Your thoughts and insight would be much appreciated.

C&S is Christiansen & Svendsen in Trondheim around 1910 to 1927. What the M.U stand for I don't know. 830 is the fineness of 830/1000 and the S is the abbreviation for "silver". Silver is silver in Norwegian :-)))))

Thank you Q, an actual name allowed me to view at least one more example of their work. Stylistically would you consider this to be in the Dragestil, Scandinavian Arts and Crafts, manner?

Your spoon is made by Christiansen & Svendsen in Trondheim and sold by Mathias Unhjem (MU) in Kristiansund 1906 - and still in work

Thank you Tosten,

Spent some tme this morning reading about Trondheim and Kristiansund. Is Mathias Unhjem a silversmith, wholesaler, and/or a retail outlet?

Now when Torsten brought the name Mathias Unhjelm to my attentions (thanks Torsten), I can tell you the he was a silversmith born 1865 and deceased 1953. He was active in Kristiansund 1906-? However, he used another punch on objects made by him and not this M.U. punch, which to my understanding is a retailer's mark. Maybe Torsten knows some more...

When Mathias Unhjem started up in 1906 it was, as I have read, a workshop with a retailer part. He then used UNHJEM and MU as mark.
Farther later on, in the 1960's, they parted up in the retailshop M.Unhjem and the workshop Unhjem Design.
Unhjem Design has used different marks from the 1960's. A spoon With MU in, a big U With 3 fishes in. (3 fishes are used as a mark of the town Kristiansund). May be other marks too.
Is this a good answer to Qrt.S?

Was very pleased to find yet another example of the work of Christiansen & Svendsen of Trondheim, Norway. This spoon is 6.187" or 157.15mm with a gold wash in the bowl.

Note the slight double strike in the makers mark.
