Great-Grandfather's Pipe

Postby Bjensen93101 » Tue Apr 01, 2014 8:53 pm

What a wealth of information here! I've looked around a bit but have not answered my own questions so I humbly turn to you for some help. At the turn of the century my great-grandfather immigrated to the United States from Copenhagen Denmark. He brought with him this meerschaum pipe. It's a beautiful piece of family history. When we cleaned the tarnished silver we discovered marks as well as an old Danish coin dated 1797 imbedded in the lid that covers the bowl. My grandfather says he does not know much about the pipe, but remembers his father smoking it in the fields as he worked the land with his horse, the cover over the bowl when he was done to keep embers from starting a grass fire. Really any information helps, but I am hoping that the marks may be recognized by some of you and will help shed some light on where/by whom this pipe was made and possibly when.

Hose,

I was just reading an article on Dansk Solv or Danish Silver, any thoughts on the makers mark? Or is that even possible without a town mark?

Thanks for the tip on the coin. Must have had some significance to have it installed in the pipe but nobody in the family knows what that might be.

Could there be other marks I'm missing? I've looked it over pretty carefully but perhaps I should look again. The backwards "N" seems like maybe a Cyrillic letter but haven't been able to figure out the "Y" with the closed top letter.

sølv is danish for silver. as simple as that.
The use of coins in silver was normal practise. Coins used in spoons beakers as bottoms etc. That was not unsual. But also indicated the bearers loyalty to the king. But the coins was used at decoration - not more as decoration.

The letters I cannot figure - X or IN
and the Y its difficuld to read. That would be maker.

The use of a norwegian coin is not unusual. Denmark and Norway was part of the same kingdom.
