Luktevannshus II

Postby Zolotnik » Wed Apr 10, 2013 3:44 am

Hi all -
found this Swedish Luktevannshus, silver/gilded - without silver marks and maker. All the until now seen similar types were without marks.
Does someone know why and who could have made them? Scarce literature give not much explanations...
Any help welcome.

It is rather seldom that Swedish made objects, even old ones, are unmarked. What makes you think it is Swedish?

Hi Qrt.S and Hose_dk -

for me too this type is new. All I have seen are unmarked. See a page from an auction house:

From Norway, Denmark and Northern Germany I have also some unmarked luktevannshus. When you know the history and the circumstances you will understand that better! There were very poor and very rich people....the poor could not afford the assay costs...and ordered from the known and trusted silversmith!

Well, dear Zolotnik you know as well as most of us do that auction houses even respectable ones invent whatever "stories" in order to get their objects sold to a good price.
Unmarked objects made in the Nordic countries exist undoubtedly but they are rather seldom found on the markets because they are so few. I don't think the origin of this luktevannshus is from any of the Nordic countries.
As to the poor people, they had other more important things on their mind than ordering unmarked "luktevannshus" from trusted silver smiths.

Hi All,

Perhaps a 18th century continental silver potpourri holder, apparently unmarked which is not uncommon

Hi all -
that is what makes collecting so interesting: you can hold in your hands what others only know from books! Theory and practice.

nice Collection - I like it. The hovedvandsæg you show are all in a form that is corresponding to tradition. And like the ones I see when looking around.

I had the idea to put a hovedvandsæg here - but I will open my own. You must visit it :-)
