Swedish Spoon 17th century later marked LVH

Postby silverfan » Thu Feb 21, 2013 2:54 pm

Hello,
a norwegian specialist for old scandinavian silver told me, that the spoon was produced in the 17th century and later remarked by Lucas von der Hagen Stockhölm 1722-1741. On the third photo one can see the state mark (three crowns; since when that mark was used?) and a letter B (?) probably for the original maker. Does anybody have an idea? Any hint welcome.
Regards silverfan

Interesting markings. The three crowns mark in an oval shield is the Swedish import mark introduced 1.1.1913, yes 1913! The Swedish three crowns mark or also called "cat's paw" was introduced 1754 and it looks like this:

Please compare the shield with the shield on your spoon that has an oval shape.

Undoubtedly Lucas van der Hagen marked LVH 1722-1765 in Stockholm but with serif letters. However, I cannot see any serifs here and not either the first letter. In addition, the year mark and Stockholm's town mark are missing too. If Hagen had remarked it later, [b]why would he have done that?

I don't think the letter B is a maker's mark, but not either a year mark because of its shield. At that time the year marks were punched without shields. The "B" could be the Swedish importer's mark/logo after 1912 because it is beside the import mark, but...?

I doubt very much that your spoon is of Swedish origin. The late import mark (1913) speaks for that. Unfortunately I cannot tell neither the maker nor the country of origin. Let's hope somebody else knows that.

The marks on the spoon still bother me. I have discussed this matter with a friend. Unfortunately the conclusion will not make you happy. Your spoon is most likely a copy or pastiche and manufactured in the 20th century. You see there are no other logical explanations for the Swedish import mark other than that the spoon is not from the 18th century but much younger. To my understanding import marks are not punched on antique objects.
Please note that this is only a personal opinion. A closer investigation is needed in order to have a full proof answer. A picture is not enough. My suggestion is that take the spoon to a museum specialized in this area and ask them.
