Scandinavian Goblet ?

Postby joho » Sun Apr 12, 2009 8:52 am

Hi - I am trying to identify maker and purpose of this goblet. It has two rows of 6 suspended dish shaped discs. The chased decoration is almost art noveau in style, but has engraved date either 1720 or 1780. It has no town hallmark, but has a makers mark AG or possibly AC. It is 5 inches high. I believe it to be Scandinavian.

Would be grateful for any help.

Thanks
John

No danish match. But in Norway we have a mark beginning 1900.
The mark is similar to Albret Groth from Christiania (Oslo) citienship december 21st 1706 burried november 8th 1717. So he cannot have made your item.
But his marks was copied in the beginning of 1900dreds. So there is a natural explanation regarding Art noveau decoration.

Thank you Hose. But can't explain the earlier engraved date. The cup certainly looks 18th century.

my guess - when people copy a mark of a silversmith - they can also copy something else....
