Reliquary Box Casket to keep a relic, e.g. the fragment of holy cross from Jerusalem, or whatever relic sold by the church.
Looks like a box, right ?
КИОТ in Russian, κῑβωτός in Hellenic.

That`s common misunderstanding; people expect an exactly the same object on Google.
Relic is a small box. After 150 years one cannot expect exactly the same or even similar form. This is not an Amazon mass produced article or flatware pattern made in million copies.

This is in my opinion more likely a box for oblate in Russian: "шкатуска" (chkatuska). Alternatively for relics, but...?
It is a Christmas gift from deacon (диакон) Vladimir on January 18th 1871 (the engravings)

It was originally a cedar box, in Russia they started to use the term for glazed box for icons. I think the definition is broader,i.e. any box where relics are kept. But I am not an expert.

What it was originally like?

Yes the "kiot(a)" was and still is a wooden box with a front/lid of glass showing/protecting the icon, made in cedar or whatever. Anyway, we are now talking about this "шкатуска" in silver and not a kiota aren't we, or? I still think it is a oblate box, but as said...? Because it is a gift it talks for oblate box in my opinion. The only thing for sure is that is imperial Russian silver! This is not an easy case...!
Actually oblate box or relic box, IT doesn't change anything or does it?

Looks like it was a part of something else; i.e. drawer box that slides in and out of a bigger piece.
It was not a standardized item, the form was created by silvermith.
