Russian Candlestick

Hello Together

From my family I got an old Candlestick and I would like to know some more about it. The only thing I know is, that it should be Russian.
And the only mark I can find on it are these A S letters on the bottom, shown on the photo. The candlestick is about 42 cm tall and made of silver.
Can anyone help?

Unfortunately there is nothing talking for Russia in your candlestick. In addition, there are no marks on it. Why do you think it is Russian or even silver? Is it a mouth to mouth legend from generation to generation or?

Yes, it's from my Grandmother and she always talked about the "Russian Candle Stick". So I never doubt that.
And as far as I can evaluate, it is silver. And I think I recognize the difference to nickel silver or anything like that...or not?

But maybe I should go on to find any more marks...

I'm a still bit doubtful. Silver is almost always marked with official country specific silver hallmarks and maker's marks. To recognize with your eyes only is an object silver or not is like a shot in the dark. Sometimes even separating German silver from silver can be difficult. It has to be tested properly. Note that an acid test is not fully reliable. In addition, there is a rusty iron nut in the bottom....a rather uncommon combination. There is also a Latin S scratched.
Of course there is a minor possibility that your candlestick is silver, made by "somebody", but almost impossible that it would be Russian made silver. Practically all Russian silver is marked. Unmarked silver was illegal in former Russia.

If this item came from Russia it doesn't mean that it was made there at all. The best way to identify the material it is made fro is just to go to your local coin shop ( my opinion). More or less decent coin shops have scanners and they can verify the material and its purity. In my area they do it free for the customers. That is how I reveal the truth in questionable cases. Thanks for your Thoughts. As I will keep this candle stand in my hands, it's not too important what it is made from and where it comes from. I thought it would be interesting to know a little more about it, but I like the item anyway...
