Riga silver spoons

Postby Dirk1966 » Sun Oct 14, 2018 7:02 am

Good morning,

I purchased these two spoons on a antiques fare last week and like to find out who the maker is?

the city mark is for Riga
Dated 1870
Assay marks is for Ludwig Zuck
Makers mark CAL? LAL ?

I have searched the internet and browsed several website for more info but so far haven't found the maker
Is there a website specific for Latvian Silver?

Hello,

The Assay Master is Ludwig Christian Zuk, in office in Riga 1856-1884 and the maker is JAL, Johann Andreas Leischke, apprenticed 1825-1829 to Johann Arved Eckström, still mentioned active 1873.

V. Vilite, no. 229, p. 76, Latvijas Sudrabkali, Riga 1993; and A. Leistikow, p. 324, Baltisches Silber, Lüneburg 1996 quoting V. Vilite as source

Interesting... this makes me wonder is there a mistake in Lestikov on page 314. Are the marks ( IAE/IAL?) above and below the mark "EKSTRÖM" de facto the marks of J. A. Leischke on page 324?

Yes, those are soot marks of original punches. An very well known, sometimes bad punching happens. It is, however, clearly seen that there are apparent similarities, but are the marks from the same maker is another question, could be or not?
Never mind, it just caught my mind...
