Silver Cup (Gilded - Niello) presumably 19th century

Postby Dendriet » Thu Jul 13, 2017 9:51 am

Hi all,

I suspect it's Artist: Mark Andrew Antonovich Kowalsk (Андрей Антонович Kowalsk)
Do not spend too much time, if it's fake, no problem.
The cup content is about 50 ml. (Vodka)

Well, not quite like you assume. The maker's mark is below Kowalsky's assaying mark (AK 1848). Unfortunately it is impossible to read. Anyway, A. Kowalsky in Moscow 1821-1856 is the assayer not the maker. He is an official only guaranteeing the minimum fineness of 84 zolotniki but nothing else. However, it doesn't look like niello, but??? Please show a close-up of the surface.

Hi,
Does not look very sophisticated. Poor craftsmanship. Much, much better niello was made in Ottoman Empire by Armenian masters in Van province, and elsewhere (Persia,India, North Africa, Balkans) and let alone in Russia.
IMO, avoid this beaker.

Curiously, this poor niello emerged online. ``Around 1840``.

Dendriet,

It's absolutely original cup.
Qrt.s has already told about Kovalsky.

Hi Dendriet -

a very nice find! This form is not often seen - absolute authentic! A pity that the maker is illegible.
Here some niello in different qualities on different objects to compare what you have:

Hi all,

Thank you everyone (Qrt.s, Dad, Ag2012 and Goldstein) for your comments and kind words

After a thorough cleanup, I discovered him in a lost corner.
I was not so impressed either. .))))

I'm going to test him tonight, maybe he may stay.
If it stays quiet tomorrow, You will know why he was at that corner .))))

Regards
Dendriet
