Hi -
just to be sure that you know who Fedor Rückert was and what distinguished his enamels from others and made them so unique:
Russian Gold and Silverwork 17th-19th Century page 208

Some authentic objects from my collection:

Now compare the technology and quality!
An example how paintings are "translated" - here a painting from S. Solomko:

and a box from Rückert

Your box was probably made in India, Mod. "Taj Mahal" like thousands of other enamel and silver fakes.

Yes! The famous Mumbai bachelor party ritual!
Or maybe a poor rendition of A Boyar Wedding Feast by Konstantin Makovsky?

Hi,
Everything has been explained by Goldstein.
This example shows the worst craftsmanship ever (just look at the hinge).
This is like claiming to have found a Rembrandt in the attic.
A benevolent remark; do not spend your money before learning the basics of ``how it`s made``, décor etc. Start collecting less lucrative silver. A simple vodka beaker is better than cloisonné made in India or elsewhere. Search online, visit antique fairs, feel silver in your hands, compare, study.
Best wishes and good luck

And the maker was having a joke by adding a moustache to the lady on the far left!

Can you believe this or an identical box to it, sold this morning at a London auction house for £1000.

Hi,
Hammer price proves what`s been said here.
Real Fedor Ruckert thing would have been at least twenty times higher. Either sold to an ignorant buyer believing in description and provenance (not available), or potentially a good investment to cheat the next victim.

You're right! But what is incredible is that may be it has been sold as a real one (usually in that case they just precise ''enameled silver box from russian 19th'' in order not to be responsable of selling fakes! Of course depending of the reputation of the seller...)

Hi -
It is an open secret that even prestigious auction houses offer knowingly fakes - mostly with legally formulated descriptions - that exclude a compensation in the event of discovery of the actual facts. Just check the different auction catalogues. Pecuniam not olet!
On the other side I have no pity with people who are total ignorants and think Fedor Rückert was a famous soccer star or something like that....

I'm agree with all your remarks, especially: if you don't know what you buy, don't buy it!
Nevertheless i'm still disappointed with the lack of légal control on this market. For me it's the same than selling a Christian Dior or Vuitton Bag as a real one whereas it is a fake: it is illegal! I remember when i was young when we traveled in Vintimiglia in Italia: if we sent back in France with a fake Cartier or Vuitton, customs confiscated it and made you pay a duty for illegal fake import!
My conclusion: may be custom officers don't know enameled russian sterling silver ;-))

The highly subjective nature of attribution appears to be the reason why judges have traditionally been reluctant to impose liability on auction houses in these cases.
