Unknown silver object with unknown marks

Postby JBA60 » Tue Aug 02, 2016 2:02 pm

Hello,

I am french, I am practice metal detecting and I found this piece of silver which has two marks, but I don't find any informations about these marks

Maybe these marks are for John Cramer or John Craig ? "I.C"
But I think the manufacturing of this object is older, as we can see with the engravings

Can you help me ?

Thanks in advance

JBA

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
I think it`s a part of Russian silver ``oklad``( icon cover ).
The marks should be St George for Moscow and the second letter in maker`s mark ``S`` in Cyrillic alphabet.
Let`s wait for other comments.
Regards

Thanks for your answer !
Good idea !

I searched on the internet what is "oklad" (or "riza"), I don't see cut silver plate like in my case, all are a stamped plate
I think you are right for the marks, it is ".C" ("S" in Cyrillic) and the "rider" mark is St George

And can you date it ?

Thanks

JBA

PS : Sorry if my english is bad :)

Hi,
I guess it was a part of halo (aureola). You know, the halo surrounding the head of saints. It was made separately. There are tiny holes for nails to fix it. But difficult to say because too much is missing. It could have been attached to a book. It`s hand pierced and hand engraved.
Best wishes.
P.S. Your English is not bad at all. It is I who regret for neglected French.

The image of the marks enlarged and embedded.
What about this St George?
Notches on both sides.
