Can Anyone Identify Maker of Imperial Russian Vase Dated 1916?

Hi everyone!

This is my first post on this forum, and I want to thank everyone who may contribute.

I have an Imperial Russian solid silver vase(?) with pierced spreading foot, engraved in Secession style.

Image

It stands 7 1/4" high by 3 1/8" diameter at foot and folded rim.

Image

It is engraved with a monogram that I believe to be an interwined "C" and "S", and it bears the engraved word, 'Love" near the foot in cyrillic script, i.e. "Люби"

Image

There are two dates engraved to opposite sides of the foot, "1915" and "1916"

Image

Image

It bears impressed marks to the recessed base, comprising a Kokoshnik mark in a circular cartouche facing right, with what may be two dots to rear of head, with a rectangular cartouche alongside, apparently "ѵSб" or similar.

Image

Inside the vase just below the folded rim is an impressed oval cartouche with Kokoshnik mark with assay mark that I believe to be Kiev, and purity "84" zol (875/1000).

Image

If "ѵSб" is the maker's mark, as I believe, can anyone here identify that maker?

Does anyone have any idea why there are two consecutive years engraved on it?

I have already done an amount of research, as should be clear from this post but, if anything I have stated here appears to be incorrect, please feel free to let me know that - it is a real learning experience for me.

Thank you!

Rick

Hi Trev

I can see them here no problem, and saw them fine in Preview prior to submitting. I normally use a laptop and can see my images on that, and just tried my desktop too, and they are visible there also.

Rick

Thank you, Peter. I had clearly misinterpreted the mark - I didn't know about the Artels but that is obviously what this mark is.

I hugely appreciate you taking the time and trouble to respond, and now I know a little more about my vase (if it is a vase!)

Regards

Rick

A nice looking piece. Just a relatively trivial further comment. I imagine the monogram is actually in cyrillic script in which case I read it as BC intertwined (i.e. VS or SV if transliterated).

Thank you for that. I have a Russian friend that looked at the inscription for me, and she said it was "To Love". I presumed she meant the verb, "To Love", rather than a present to someone called Love.

When I looked online at the infinitives of "Love" in cyrillic, the nearest I could see was Люби, which is what the inscription reads. So, I made the amateurish error of assuming that my Russian friend misunderstood, when in reality she had told me EXACTLY what it said..!

I'm still learning about this piece!

My wife found it, rather tarnished, in an antique mall in Virginia, where the dealer had priced it as if it were a piece of cheap silverplate... my wife knew better. We didn't realise it was Russian until I saw the cyrillic inscription, "Люби", and then I knew.

From there on I was able to find the Kokoshnik marks and learned about "84". Actually, only last night we found the hallmarks inside the vase. We had only previously found the Kokoshnik and the 25th Artel mark under the base, but I didn't know until today what the 25th Artel was.

You guys have been amazing, and I appreciate all the help.

Regards

Rick
