J6 on a goblet.

This is a nice little goblet with a Tallinn mark from the Soviet era. Can anyone identify the ‘J6’ mark?

No problem, but the reason why you probably cannot find it is that usually the year mark "6" is in front of TJ. Anyway, it stands for Таллинский Ювелирный Завод 1976 i.e. Tallinn Jewellery Factory 1976 in the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic.

??? Mind my asking, I'm curious, research what? You have all information available regarding the goblet or do you mean the other mark? That is the Soviet control mark for silver, a five star with a Cyrillic E (Estonia) hammer and sickle and 875 i.e. 875/1000, so?

Thank you. I do know what the other mark is. I meant that I was going to look into the work of the Tallinn Jewelry Factory.

There seems to be some debate about the reason for the number representing the date of manufacture being before the TJ or after it. Being just a single numeral, it would seem logical that there would need to be a method of distinguishing years from different decades. TJ6 and 6TJ therefore would represent 1966 and 1976 or possibly the other way around. In the absence of documentary source evidence, what would be required to establish a definite answer would be the sight of a mark on a piece which was knowingly produced in a particular year. Unfortunately the goblet illustrated has no provenance and cannot therefore be used for this purpose. It would be interesting to know if anyone has such a piece, or knows of one, in order to verify which positioning of the marks applied to which decade.
