Help with silver box and marks

Postby jondane » Fri Apr 27, 2012 6:20 pm

I have a small silver box wit niello decoration and am unable to identify all of the marks.
The box is 8.5 x 3.5 5.5 cm. Weighs 110g and is decorated all over with engraved niello decorations. Iside retains some of the gilding and contains and engraved name of P Turner(s) Birmingham.
The decoration on the top seems to show the burning of a city with mounted soldiers in the forefront.
I cannot identify the maker's mark and unfortunately the date seems to have been rubbed or missed being stamped. I have included images of the marks present on the inside of the curved lid and inside the curved body.

Hi jondane -

unfortunately this snuffbox is of contemporary make, the marks are pseudo marks.

Hi, jondane.

It's authentic item. Moscow. About 1830-1840. Assaymaster Nikolai Dubrovin (НД) (worked 1823-1855). Finess 84 zolotnik (.875). Maker may be Osip Balanov (Осип Баланов), who worked in moscow in 1838 (Ivanov) . If punch : ОБ (cyrillic).

Best Reg..

Hi Dad -
please have a closer look at the 2 horsemen (uniform, monkeyfaces) and the inept "chemical" niello. It is a coincident that the assay mark is illegible and the maker is unknown? Only Ivanov know him - but has no photo or sketch of the mark as usual. Russia was famous for its niello - this is an upgraded Italian box I would say according to style, quality and uniforms.
