marrow scoop from Russia?

Postby zilverik » Mon Mar 12, 2012 5:16 pm

Hi,

This is a nice marrow scoop. Good proportions. Weight only 21 gramms; lengh only 18 cm.The last two pictures are from the same mark from a different angle. Sorry I wasn't able to make a sharper photo. I read 84. Russian? Who could be the maker?

Regards,

Zilverik

Hi zilverik -
though I never have seen a marrow scoop made in Russia, here the only mark which fit more or less: Sohlman, Paul Fredrik /St. Petersburg, between 1867 and 1898

Hi Zolotnik,

Thank you very much. This date surprises me. The form of the marrow scoop looks more like 1920 to me. Sort of Art Deco form. Could this form fits the makers time?

Hi zilverik -

for me the whole object is dubious: the style, the form and the purpose. The marks look genuine but the rest looks a little bit "homeworked". Maybe someone tried his skills to make a mariage between an Art Deco marrow scoop and some Russian leftovers from an other "project". I would renounce....

Hmmmm I would say too. Why are the marks so "smudgy" and worn on the stem? I would also appreciate a better picture of the mark right to the hallmark on second picture (it looks like P, ,or?) I see no actual reason for this mark.

Hi,

Two more photo's could maybe of help? The mark of the master is very small. It looks like a "P" dot cyrillic "E" (180°different) or "E" dot cyrillic "P" upside down. The quality of the marrow scoop is good. It's not heavy but simple and functional. The scoop itself has a gilding inside. Nice work. Good proportions. For me, not meant to be a fake.

Hi zilverik -

found in my collection a cigarette case with the identic mark - proof your mark is authentic (only the mark :-) ). It is Paul Sohlman....P.S.

OK, so it most likely would be made by Paul Sohlman who marked 1867-1898. He was a Finn born 12.8.1837 in Kangasala in Central Finland. Apprentice in Fabian Allenius's workshop in St Petersburg, journeyman 1856 and master 1867. In Sohlman's workshop worked as journeyman Hjalmar Armfelt who later became famous working with Fabergé. In 1865 May 30th Sohlman married Maria Christina Ellonen born 11-1.1848 in Luumäki Finland.

Nonetheless, what (extra) mark is right of the hallmark?

Just asking of curiosity.

Hi Zolotnik and Qrt.S,

Thank you very much. Great to know the maker as Paul Sohlman. For me it fits that he makes things like a cigarette box and a marrow scoop. I have no doubts that the marrow scoop is authentic unless the cigarette box is suspicious as well. So the ridiculous question comes to mind: What did Paul Sohlman faked first the cigarette box or the marrow scoop?

Zilverik
