Demitase spoon #3

Postby prainey » Sat Feb 18, 2012 1:35 pm

Please help me to identify the silver spoon which appears on the far right of the group photo. As background, I became aware of these spoons about 60 years ago. My amateur sleuthing led me to suspect that these were of scandanavian origin. They may have belonged to my grandmother who was born in Sweden and died in Connecticut in 1952. I understand that this type of phlique-a-jour enameling was very popular in Scandanavia and Russia. This very colorful and elaborate spoon is exactly four inches long.

Once again, not plique-a-jour enameling. This spoon appears to be Russian, I'm sure that your spoons will be move to the appropriate forums by an administrator.

Yes it looks Russian but clean up the marks and try again with new better pictures. The technique is called cloisonée. FYI, plique-a-jour enameling is translucent.

Many thanks to both of you for contributing to my education and to the identification goal. I will try to get a better photo of the mark.

Here are some closer looks at the makers mark. The second letter appears to be a 4 and the first letter may be a 6 or an 8.

OK thanks, better pictures but the marks are still unclear. From what I can see the spoon is from Russia and made in Moscow 1882-1899. It is in silver in 84 zolotnik i.e. 875/1000. The maker's initials could be НС or ИС. Who that would be is a rather difficult question, there are alternatives...
