Another cloisonne spoon, genuine?

Postby Silbersammler » Wed Dec 29, 2010 8:56 am

Good day to everybody,
once again I would like to take the assistance up of the experts here. A friend of me possesses a Russian Cloisonne spoon in his collection. I looked at this item and have doubts about the authenticity. Hallmarks do not look bad (my opinion with not much experience), but which does not please me, is the quality of the Cloisonne work: the twisted wires have too many gaps, I believe. After what I learned here, this should not be when it is a genuine piece, correctly?
Each opinion is very welcome

Hi Silbersammler -

your doubts were right - it is one of the many Gustav Klingert fakes. The cloisonné "wireing" and the enamel colours are not the quality you expect on a GK spoon. The marks are funny but wrong - look at the "rocking horse" as townmark from Moscow....

Here an original Klingert spoon with the typical enamel colours he is famous for:

Please also note the the unknown assayer AC again on a faked spoon- This AC from Moscow from late 19th century is often seen on on faked objects. Yes the Moscow town mark is interesting. Now we have got a companion to "Ant George" this "Rocking George". I addition, note that the "84" is out of line and the town mark " Rocking George" looks like a separate mark when it should be a poincon i.e. a triple.

I would appreciate if you Postnikow would show a magnified picture of the blade of your spoon. A similar picture Steffen showed. It would be interesting to compare the quality.

Happy New Year all of you

Thanks also to you, Qrt.S, I have to look more exactly to the hallmarks in the future.

@ postnikov: much better quality, but there is also a gap in the twisted wire, isn`t it?

Hi Silbersammler -
it is a rather little spoon, 2.5 cm x 4 cm bowl measure and rather worn with some enamel loss. Maybe missuse?
But principally you can see the difference in the colours and the work. Do not forget, these spoons were mass produced!

Thank you for showing your spoon. Mind my asking but is the white enamel damaged or what are the "dots" you can see? About the gaps, maybe the spoon is "second choise"?

Hi Qrt.S -

as I mentioned before - there are enamel losses and the little spoon is quite worn.
There is no "second choice" - only tiny, small, normal and large spoons. If you have more space, the pattern could be more specific. Remember that the photo is a blow up of a small spoon.
