Russian Citron Fork ?

Postby silverfan » Wed Nov 03, 2010 11:43 am

Since having entered as a member in 2005 I followed the russian threats with great interest, but didn't dare to buy russian pieces because of the high number of fakes. I prefered to stay in the German area.
Now I got some pieces for very little money, of which I first post a supposed citron fork. Maker's mark is PJS in a rectangular shape and town mark of St. Petersburg. I cannot date the item.
Please tell me who PJS is and at what time this town mark was used. Thanks in advance.

Hi silverfan -
your little fork is not marked as it should be! Wrong place. The silversmith´s ( P.J.S or PJS in a rectangle) name was recently enciphert: Silvennoinen Pekka 1886- 1908.
Please try to post better photos - it is very frustrating to play the clairvoyant!

Hi Postnikov,
thank you very much for your quick answer. I had found the PJS mark in silvercollection.it as unknown.
Now I have diminshed the fotos to 50% and I hope it will fit. Is the town mark also called kokoshnik mark though not having a kokoshnik head? In what period this mark was used? Before 1896? Perhaps only on smaller items?

Sorry, I don't succeed in getting the diminished photos uploaded. Apparently I have no sufficient computer knowledge.

Hello »silverfan« Christian

Sorry, forget the upload of yours 50 % photos - what »Postnikov« and all the other contributors don't like: getting »Augenpulver«; we don't like to destroy our eyesight for laziness of others.

The quality of the by you presented images isn't sufficient clear (e.g. for maybe necessary enlargements for to could see details, like dots ...). As an experienced person you should already know this, and could do it better, m u c h better!

Please don't forget, to let be the images available as long as it ever could be. Thank you!

Please look here, how easy it is to add images: http://www.925-1000.com/images.html

I hope that helps you some steps.

Kind regards silverport

Hi silverfan -

The townmark is called townmark. The Kokoshnik mark is called Kokoshnik mark. The townmark on your fork was in use before 1900 - it was townmark and assaymark. 1899-1908 came the Kokoshnik mark with woman looking left, 1908-1926 came the Kokoshnik mark with woman looking right. There are more important details on the different marks (assayer, town, codes etc.) but that is where you should buy some books. BTW the name Kokoshnik is the name for the typical headwear of Russian women. Here is a pic of the Szarina with a very expensive Kokoshnik - normal women had "simpler" Kokoshniks!

Regards and forward to the bookshop

Hello »Postnikov«, »silverfan« Dirk et all

Sorry, it isn’t a question what experts could see or imagine from blurry images. We aren’t the only readers! These pages destination is to serve All — also there fore now these results are stored for future need.

Maybe you would classify between »Hardliners« like me, and »Soft-liner« as like you. I like to could see details of marks for observation, and for then after maybe possible classifications.

Not all countries on the Globe have, or have had an Assay System e.g. with indications of the year of assay.

So it is one of the basic necessities to have as much information as possible; because we haven’t the object and couldn’t handle it; look with the magnifier here and there, and every where, where maybe more indicators are hidden.

A very big problem is that only some topics have until yet their images always available.

From a few they are some hours later already being deleted, invisible. Not from »925-1000« - but almost often deleted by the users themselves. That’s crazy — isn’t it?

Dimensions are another case with same importance; that you know from a recently placed question. One person places permanent dimensions in »sm« = sea miles; another describes, that his objects have 8 cm lengths and around 60 gram weight = in reality maybe of 8 inch lengths?

What could »buckler« do with blurry images? Not only from him, but also by his contributions I’m confirmed.

E.g. the Portuguese maker’s marks after 1867 have got a difficulty never expected before — if a punch is worn, there must some times be said: »Couldn’t be identified«.

It isn’t a secret, but the percentage is unknown, how many of the «925-1000« users aren’t collectors, which knowledge would be enlarged — but commercials of several grade.

»925-1000«, and many other, similar internet sites are a phenomenon: Very often is the »Output« better as ever the »Input« was.

But maybe 10 % of the questions remained until yet without solutions? There fore was some times after the start in 2005 be published the »Posting Requirements«, and as a part of these, a guide »How to add Images«.

I resist contra the ignoring users — I claim to get »Clear Images«! Of course, I request also to describe the dimensions — and maybe some other known details as well.

I hope that by time and while the visible results of »Good behaviour would spoil bad behaviours«.

Kind regards silverport
