Any help with this would be great.

I think the town mark is Zhytomyr?

Would the slit cut for the utensil be original?





Like I said, anything would be wonderful.

Hello Edward,

That does seem to be a Gitomir piece, but the Assay Master is listed as “unknown” in my references. The maker’s mark is a bit of a puzzle. I can find no record anywhere of a Russian silversmith using Old English script letters. Could this possibly be an overstamp. As to the slot in the lid, it looks a very amateur piece of work compared to the rest of the piece.

your piece is not Russian it is Estonian (under Russian rule).
Townmark: Dorpad - now Tartu
Assaymaster: M.Medvedev (1854 and 1858)
Silversmith: Nagel, Christian Gottlieb, 1840 - 1884
Since May 29th 1840 master in Dorpat. 1864 - 1877 Ältermann

The lid of your container (for toileteries) was vandalized by some barbar - I think he/she wanted to make a jam pot out of it.
