Silver Mesh/Chain Mail Ladies Bag -

Hi

Please help identify the bag as attached pictures, I was told it is Russian? It appears to have been hallmarked at a later date a number of times? all the main hallmarks are rubbed or disguised?

The chain has a hallmark which I think is JB

another 2 hallmarks on the chain are difficult to make out with the naked eye and difficult to photograph.

A number 25 is stamped or engraved on 1 side?

Would the mesh be sterling silver?

apologies for the quality of images it has taken hundreds to get to this quality...any tips for taking better pictures?

I would like to know if people believe that the bag is Russian? sterling silver? Date? Manufacturer? Retailer? any ideas on why it has so many hallmarks? any similar bags with similar hallmarks? any ideas on the stones on the clasp? amethyst? or?

any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

I think the mark on the chain is 800?? attached picture, not sure if the other mark is a hallmark or damage? also attached another detail picture of the additional? hallmarks on the bage frame.

Would the 800 mark mean the bag is more likely to be German?.. or?

Strange marks... The chain must be replaced later since the quality is only 800/1000. That was not allowed i Russia. The lowest quality was 84 zolotnik i.e. 875/1000.

It looks that it reads K. Fabergé and a master mark of EK. Then there is also a kokoshnik mark from 1908-1926. But if EK is supposed to be Erik Kollin, who worked with Fabergé, he was dead at that time (1836-1901). In addition EK worked mostly with gold.

Moreover, the kokoshnik mark should include the Greek letter alfa but I don't see an alfa but something else. Strange indeed...spurious marks to me. But that's only my personal opinion...

Thanks for your reply, i believe the hallmarks are fakes...added later? not sure if the entire bag would be 800 silve as the chain? or like suggested the chain could be a later addition?

assuming the main hall marks are later fakes would they have been stamped over existing marks? the bag has 3 sets of the oblong marks, any ideas as to why the hallmarks are so close to the edge of the bag?

Would appreciate any advice on the 800 and JB? hallmarks on the chain. If 800 silver was not allowed in russia. could the bage be German?

If you need to know the quality, you have to test the whole bag. The 800 quality is rather common. It could be Italy, France, Germany, Poland... If the bag is a fake, the 800 doesn't tell you anything.

Marking close to the edge makes the marks a bit unclear, maybe for a certain reason...? I don't think that existing marks have been over marked, you could see it with or even without a magnifier.

Kindly tell me what letter/cipher is behind the kokoshnik's neck? Unfortunately I have no idea regarding JB, sorry. Maybe somebody else has.

it is a very common former German bag from around 1920/30, which was "upgraded" by some clueless fakers to a Fabergé bag.
