Moishe Chaim Liebovich Gold was born in Vilnius in 1866, the son of goldsmith Leiba Shmuelovich Gold (1826-aft. 1898), to whom he was apprenticed in 1887. He received his master's certificate in 1892 and worked in his father's shop until 1896 when he opened his own. He is recorded as having apprentices each year between 1897-1899. There is no information on him beyond that, but his mark is known with the kokoshnik mark in use after 1908.
Also, to correct a minor misprint in Watts' book, "Apollonovich" was the assayer's patrynomic; his full name was Anatoli Apollonovich Artsybashev.
