The Bank of England Museum is located within the Bank of England

The Bank has a relatively small collection of silver compared with other long-established City bodies. Nevertheless the collection contains much of considerable artistic and historical interest.

The Museum is open Monday to Friday, 10.00 - 17.00. It is closed at weekends and on Public and Bank Holidays.

Admission to the Museum is free of charge.

Whilst in London this week I took the opportunity to visit the Bank of England Museum. As stated in the above post, the silver collection is small, but what it lacks in quantity it certainly makes up for in quality.

The highlights of the collection are a fine pair of candlesticks by Anthony Nelme, assayed in 1693, a toilet mirror by Benjamin Pyne, 1694, a massive tankard by William Gamble, 1695, a very heavy Rouen silver wine cooler from 1694 and a large inkstand by Paul de Lamerie, 1733, that was presented to the bank by Robert Walpole.

Much of the silver relates to 1694, the year of the Bank's foundation, but there is also a variety of other pieces up to the modern day.

Well worth a visit, my only disappointment is that the Bank does not publish any material detailing the collection.
