Ebbe Weiss-Weingart. Avantgardistin und Altmeisterin des Schmucks

Ebbe Weiss-Weingart. Avant-garde and doyen of jewelry

Until 15th May 2022

With her incisive works, Ebbe Weiss Weingart (1923-2019) rendered a significant contribution to the revival of artistic jewelry post-1945. Experiments with unusual techniques, materials and design media were at the forefront for this master goldsmith. Closer illumination of this abundant spectrum is provided by selected jewelry items from a period of creativity that lasted more than 70 years.

For many decades, Ebbe Weiss-Weingart was one of the most important goldsmiths of avant-garde jewelery in the 20th century. The master goldsmith worked in her workshop in Salem on Lake Constance until 2015. The artist knew how to inspire a large audience with her sometimes unusual design language and bizarre figurative creations.

When gold was still scarce, the young artist enthusiastically experimented with brass, wood and colored glass flows, and she was also fascinated by the technique of enamelling. In the foreground of her work are abstract-organic forms, the inclusion of the figurative plays an important role in all work phases. In the 1960s and 1970s, the artist was always concerned with exploring the metal surface, the jewelry, mostly made of gold, is characterized by hatching, furrows, folds, etching and openings, analogous to the fine arts. Fusion of gold granules, experiments with electroplating and flame spraying are in the foreground. In the 1970s, the artist worked with acrylic glass, which she used in large objects as well as in jewellery. Necklaces and brooches made from exotic materials such as ostrich egg slices and silicified palm and ebony, landscape agate, cross stone and White Jurassic lime are complemented with cast gold applications and small gemstones. Lapis lazuli, coral, but also emerald, ruby, brilliant, opal and tourmaline set colorful accents. Lavish necklaces and bracelets with Keshi and Biwa pearls are complemented with elaborately cast clasps. At the beginning of the 1990s, Ebbe Weiss-Weingart devoted herself to Chinese jade and imaginatively incorporated it into her Lavish necklaces and bracelets with Keshi and Biwa pearls are complemented with elaborately cast clasps. A close, friendly relationship developed between the artist and Hanau in the early 1970s, when her first exhibition was presented in the Goldschmiedehaus. Günter Rauch and the head of the goldsmith's house at the time, Rudolf Schäffer.

In 2006, Ebbe Weiss-Weingart donated a representative selection of 239 works from the years 1947 to 1998 to the city of Hanau, which will be published in the publication “Sammlung Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus. Ebbe Weiss-Weingart 1947 – 1998” were documented. The main focus of this donation was the jade group, which was created in 1990. In the years that followed, the artist gave the city of Hanau further works on permanent loan, which primarily document the early work and were donated to the Goldschmiedehaus in 2014. Over the course of time, further exhibits from all groups of works, above all models and drafts, came on permanent loan to the museum's collection and allowed further research into the artist's work. This reappraisal was documented in the publication “Ebbe Weiss-Weingart – 70 Years of Jewelery” in 2017. After the artist's death in 2019, these additions were donated to the city of Hanau this year. The now extremely extensive bundle was supplemented by many documents - letters, certificates, photos - on the life of the artist and numerous design drawings.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday - 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m - Closed Mondays.
