New Temptations - Acquisitions of the CODA Jewellery Collection

Until 6th March 2022

Wearing jewelry is often about identity and awareness. Jewelry is part of the constantly changing fashion image, in which ever-changing accessories play an important role. With over 10,000 objects, CODA has the largest museum collection of modern artists' and fashion jewelry in the world. A collection that is growing steadily through purchases and loans as well as through donations and legacies. The exhibition New Temptations will be on view in the Van Reekum Gallery in CODA Museum, containing a selection of acquisitions acquired over the past two years.

New Temptations pays attention to the special donation from the estate of Jerven Ober (1942-2009). In 1976 Ober became director of the Historical Museum Marialust and the Municipal Van Reekum Gallery and lays the foundation for the jewelery collection of CODA Museum, which emerged around 2000 from the Van Reekum Museum and the Historisch Museum Apeldoorn. The donation has more than 200 pieces of jewelry that provide insight into the development of modern jewelry and includes work by Onno Boekhoudt, Françoise van den Bosch, Caroline Broadhead, Paul Derrez and Emmy van Leersum. In New Temptations you can see various special pieces of jewelry from his estate.

One of the largest private jewelery collectors in the Netherlands is Jurriaan van den Berg (1943-2016). His collection includes jewelery by Gijs Bakker, Ruudt Peters and Philip Sajet, among others. Because Van den Berg wants to make the public more familiar with modern jewellery, he advocates that collectors should also be able to display their private collection in museums. To make this possible, he is actively involved in mapping all collectors in the Netherlands. In addition to 253 jewellery, CODA also acquired boxes and display cases that Van den Berg designed and manufactured himself. In time, his paper archive of card indexes and correspondence will also be sent to CODA.

This exhibition also pays attention to a large donation from the work of Laura Bakker (1954) and to a purchase by Réka Fekete (1982). Recent purchases from jewelery makers who are part of CODA's core collection, including Felieke van der Leest and Alexander Blank, are also on display.

Special is the fashion jewelery that CODA acquired earlier this year, the Dove Brooch . Lady Gaga wore this piece of jewelry during her performance at Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20 this year. This gold-colored pigeon adorned just below her shoulder and flew around the world online and via television images. Both this brooch and her clothing are designed by Daniel Roseberry, creative director of fashion house Schiaparelli. This iconic brooch of a dove with an olive branch, the symbol for hope and peace, fits in seamlessly with the fashion jewelery sub-collection that CODA has been building on with new purchases since 2016.

New Temptations shows work by Alexander Blank, Annelies Planteijdt, Beppe Kessler, Charlotte van der Waals, Chequita Nahar, Emmy van Leersum, Felieke van der Leest, Françoise van den Bosch, Gallard, Giampaolo Babetto, Gijs Bakker, Givenchy, Hans Appenzeller, Helen Britton, Henk Visch, Herman Hermsen, Jacob Bengel, Jiro Kamata, Laura Bakker, Lia de Sain, Maria Hees, Marion Blume,
