Sieraden uit de bodem

Until 31st December 2019

Museum Het Valkhof shows the most beautiful pieces from its collection of jewelry from prehistory, Roman times and the Middle Ages. You can see with how much attention to detail some jewels are made and it becomes clear how our love for jewelry is rooted in earlier times.

Jewelry is probably as old as humanity itself. It is a way to distinguish yourself or to radiate power. Gold jewelry, pre-eminently status bearers, has been found in Gelderland since 2300 BC, but remains very rare until Roman times. They often indicate contacts with other peoples, for example within the Celtic area, where networks were created through the exchange of precious gifts.

Bronze jewelry comes from around 1800 BC. for: neck rings, bracelets and decorative needles, used to close clothing. From around 500 BC. add braid rings and hair jewelry.

The Romans bring their own style of body decoration to our country. Rings made of precious and base metals, but also precious stones, are very popular. A new fashion emerges in the early Middle Ages, which is strikingly similar in Northwestern Europe. Jewelry is typically inlaid with pieces of almandine, a bright red gemstone from India. Beautifully decorated belts for men can certainly also be counted among the jewelry.

Many of these age-old jewelry were given to graves, or were abandoned or lost for various reasons. They are often found in archaeological excavations after having been buried in the soil for centuries. By comparing this jewelry with preserved paintings and sculptures, we can form a picture of its use.
