M. T. Wetzlar, Silberschmiede in München

Moses Tobias Wetzlar (1847 — 1916), son of famed Rabbi Mordechai Wetzlar, had founded his shop for jewels, gold- and silverware in Munich in 1875. Wetzlar, his sons and grandsons became leading figures of the Munich cultural scene, were suppliers to the Bavarian court and held close contact to leading Munich designers in the years before and after the First World War. Being of Jewish origin, the family was forced to sell out in 1938 and fled to Great Britain.

Now for the first time an exhibition displays the family history and the history of this small company. On display are silver objects from the Wetzlar workshop as well as pieces from two little known cutlery patterns connected with Wetzlar. One, the strikingly modernistic "Kunstwart" pattern, first shown in 1908 and still in production today. Second, the pattern for the city council of Munich, the "Ratsbesteck", designed by Heinrich Wetzlar in 1930, pieces of which today are in the possession of the Stadtmuseum.

A catalogue has been announced to be published in the spring of 2014. It will deal with the Munich cultural scene of 1880-1938, the family history and the Wetzlar workshop, with special sections on the two flatware patterns mentioned. The catalogue (hardcover, 176 pages) will be completely bilingual in English and German and will contain ca. 250 photos, many of them in colour.
