British Silversmith Dynasties

The London Silver Vaults
Chancery Lane
London WC2A 1QS

Until 4th October 2009

The London Silver Vaults showcases three great British silversmith dynasties. Hester Bateman’s family in 18th century London was known for high quality, classic Georgian design. The Elkingtons in the Victorian era owed their success to revolutionising the production of silver plate. James Dixon & Sons built their reputation on quality, and became a world wide brand.

REVIEW

Probably not worth a trip in itself. I went there this week, and there were only around 20 items devoted to each "dynasty" with very little information provided. The items in the Bateman cabinet were not particuarly special.

However, the Silver Vaults themselves are, in my opinion, the best place in England to learn about silver. Dozens of shops 15 metres underground owned by people who specialise in silver, most of whom gladly share their knowledge. In their own words "There's nothing like us anywhere else in the world".
