Who is G. Andersen ?

Postby Bahner » Thu May 31, 2007 10:37 am

Hello, this is about pieces of handwrought sterling cutlery (salad servers, meat fork, lemonade spoons etc.). The pattern looks like “Karen” by the Old Newbury Crafters, first made, according to the JCK pattern index, in 1939.

The pieces have none of the marks documented by Rainwater (I have access to the first and third edition only) for the Newbury Crafters, neither “ONC”, nor the personal signature mark of the individual maker. Instead the marks are:

Just the lemonade spoons have an additional mark:

who is probably the Chicago dealer, acting as retailer. But - who is G. Andersen ? Any info is welcome. Thanks and best wishes, Bahner

Your pieces were made by Gunnar Andersen, Karen was his design and in addition to being sold by upscale Chicago jeweler C.D. Peacock, was also stocked at the Georg Jensen USA store in New York. Not sure if he was based in Chicago or in nearby Wisconsin. Believe he passed away in 1950 and Old Newbury acquired the pattern sometime after 1955.

Hi Cheryl, thanks, much appreciated !! Sharon S. Darling in her book on Chicago metalsmiths doesn't mention a G. Andersen, so I guess he was working from Wisconsin. Best wishes, Bahner

Here's some information on C.D. Peacock from Rainwater's 4th and 5th editions.
